10 Tips for Preparing Your Property for Winter
Preserve your property’s appearance and avoid major renovations in the long run by performing these recommended maintenance tasks every season. François-William Simard, Communications Director for the APCHQ, has provided us with this handy list of 10 tips for preparing (and protecting) your home for the harsh winter months.
1. Clean the gutters
Avoid backups and ice accumulation on your roof.
2. Remove pipes connected to the gutters
To ensure they don’t freeze and overflow come spring.
3. Clean out the area beneath cement balconies
To make sure the ice doesn’t cause them to rise.
4. Detach your garden hose
To avoid it bending and causing water infiltration.
5. Verify sealants around windows and doors
To make sure the hot air stays… in!
6. Clean the filters on your air exchanger
To make sure you’re breathing healthy when spending the majority of your time in the house.
7. Check the drain on your air exchanger
To avoid water leakage during the spring thaw.
8. Reduce condensation on windows
Remove screens, keep curtains open at night and wipe off any frost along the base of windows in the morning.
9. Make sure all doors and windows close properly
To avoid drafts and save energy.
Inspect the air vents around the dryer and kitchen hood
To avoid odors and dust accumulation.
Happy prepping!
